About Gem Maze
Gem Maze is a route-planning game wearing an arcade costume. The maze is carved with a recursive-backtracker algorithm, which produces exactly one path between any two points — every gem it places is reachable, and no branch is ever a genuine dead loss.
It is then braided: roughly three in ten dead ends have a wall knocked through, opening loops in the layout. This matters more than it sounds. A perfect maze forces you to reverse out of every dead end, which at speed feels like being punished for exploring. A braided maze gives you route choices and lets a confident player keep moving.
The exit only opens once the last gem is collected, so the game has two distinct halves: a collection phase where the clock is a background worry, and a dash phase where it suddenly is not. A green arrow appears beside your character pointing toward the exit the moment it opens — the maze is the challenge, not remembering where the door was.
How to play Gem Maze
Objective
Collect every gem in the maze to open the exit, then reach the exit before the timer runs out.
Keyboard
- ↑ ↓ ← → / WASD — Move through the maze
- P / Esc — Pause and resume
- M — Mute or unmute
- R — Restart once the run is over
Touch
- Direction buttons — Move through the maze
- Drag on the play area — Steer toward your finger
- Tap the play area — Start the run from the ready screen
What to avoid
Spinning cutters and unstable energy orbs parked in corridors, some patrolling a short range. Contact costs an energy unit and returns you to the maze entrance.
How to collect gems in Gem Maze
Walk over a gem to collect it. Gems are distributed across roughly a third of the maze's floor tiles, weighted so the far corners hold more of the valuable types. None are hidden in this game — everything is visible from the moment you turn into its corridor — which makes Gem Maze the pure navigation game in our treasure category, with none of the search element that Crystal Cave Collector and Treasure Tunnel add.
Gems
The standard collectible, worth 10 points before your multiplier. The backbone of every streak.
Crystals
Worth 15 points. Usually laid out in trails and arcs rather than singly.
Jewels
Worth 25 points. Hexagonal, and usually placed just past an obstacle.
Treasure
Worth 35 points. Bar-shaped treasure gems mark a route worth a detour.
Power-ups
Speed Boost
Increases your movement speed for six seconds. Faster routes, but less time to read what is ahead.
Gem Magnet
Pulls nearby gems toward you for eight seconds, so you can hold a streak through an awkward gap.
Gem Vacuum
Sweeps up every gem in a wide radius automatically for five seconds.
Scoring and combos
Gems pay base value times your multiplier. Clearing a level awards 300 points plus fifteen for every second left on the clock, and the time bonus is where the real scoring separation happens: two players can collect identical gems and finish hundreds of points apart purely on route efficiency.
Every five gems collected in a row raises your multiplier by one, to a ceiling of five times. A missed gem or an unshielded hit sends it straight back to one. Twenty gems collected as one unbroken chain is worth roughly three times the same twenty gems collected with breaks in between.
Because nothing here forces you past a hazard and no gem can leave the play area, the streak in Gem Maze is entirely under your control. A clean level is a five-times multiplier from the second gem onward. If your multiplier is breaking, you are brushing cutters in corridors — slow down at junctions and the whole score moves.
Difficulty
Medium. The first maze is nine by seven cells with seventy seconds on the clock. Each level adds cells in both directions, adds hazards, and shortens the timer by six seconds down to a floor. Because the maze grows faster than the timer shrinks, later levels are about covering ground efficiently rather than moving quickly.
Tips for a better score
- Plan a loop, not a path. Braiding means the maze usually has a circuit that hits most of the map without doubling back.
- Collect toward the exit. You do not know where the exit is at the start, but it is always at the far corner from your entrance — bias your route that way.
- Take the vacuum power-up into a dense corner. It sweeps a wide radius and can clear a whole junction in one pass.
- Slow down at junctions. Almost every hit in this game happens while turning a corner at full speed into a parked cutter.
- If the level is nearly clear, stop collecting opportunistically and go get the stragglers. Hunting the last two gems while the clock burns is where levels are lost.
- The time bonus is fifteen points a second. A level cleared twenty seconds early is worth an extra 300 — the same as clearing the level at all.

Frequently asked questions about Gem Maze
Is the maze different every time?
Yes. Each level carves a new maze. The algorithm guarantees one path between any two points before braiding, so every gem is always reachable no matter how the layout comes out.
What does braiding mean?
After the maze is carved, about three in ten dead ends have a wall removed, creating loops. It makes the maze far more pleasant to move through at speed because you rarely have to reverse out of a passage.
Where is the exit?
At the far corner from where you start, and it stays closed until the last gem is collected. Once it opens, a short green arrow beside your character points toward it.
What happens when the timer runs out?
The run ends and your score is saved. Time left when you clear a level converts into points at fifteen per second, so beating the clock comfortably is worth real points rather than just survival.
Are any gems hidden in this game?
No. Gem Maze is pure navigation — everything is visible as soon as you can see the corridor it is in. Crystal Cave Collector and Treasure Tunnel are the games that hide their treasure.
